Listening Tree cover Vol. 43

Tim Exile

IDM / drum & bass / live electronics · England

Tim Exile is English producer Timothy Charles Shaw, who started on classical violin at 12 and spent the 2000s moving from dark drum & bass on Moving Shadow through warped IDM on Planet Mu to a genuinely pop-leaning record on Warp. The real draw was always the live show — entirely improvised, built from looped and pitch-shifted vocals, gabba beats and whatever synth textures he's cooking up in the moment.

Did you knowHe got so fed up with ordinary DJing that he built his own performance software from scratch, and Native Instruments turned it into the commercial plugins The Finger and The Mouth. He later rebuilt the idea as Endlesss, a remote jamming app that blew up during lockdown with artists like Imogen Heap jumping in.

Original Pirate Material cover Vol. 42

The Streets

UK garage / British rap · Birmingham, England

The Streets is Mike Skinner, a Birmingham lad who moved to Brixton at the turn of the millennium with a laptop and basically invented a whole new way of rapping. He spits over 2-step UK garage beats in his own thick geezer accent, about pints, kebabs, PlayStation and skint Fridays. Not grime, not garage, not hip-hop, but somehow all three at once — and nobody's sounded quite like it since.

Did you knowHe recorded his debut in a Brixton flat using an emptied-out wardrobe stuffed with duvets as his vocal booth, and the whole thing cost under £4,000 to make. He still writes his lyrics as text messages to himself.

Original Pirate Material2002
The album that turned everyday British life into pop art — still sounds like nothing else over 20 years on.
One Day Deep cover Vol. 41

Praful

Chill-out nu-jazz / sax & electronica · Amsterdam, Netherlands

Praful is a German-born saxophonist who finished a jazz degree in Amsterdam and then took a very unusual detour before his career really began. He blends jazz, acid jazz, Latin rhythms and electronica into something warm, breathy and unhurried — smoky sax and bansuri flute floating over soft electronic grooves. Built for a slow Sunday morning.

Did you knowStraight out of jazz school he spent six months in an Osho ashram in India studying the bansuri flute, and came back with a new name. Years later his single 'Sigh' camped out on the Billboard charts for over 70 weeks and landed him a US deal on a label co-run by Dave Koz.

Forever Transient cover Vol. 40

Your Infamous Harp

Glitch-hop / jungle with angelic vocals · Chicago, USA

Your Infamous Harp is the husband-and-wife duo of Andy and Sara Domin, who've been making music together since 2006 and somehow turn skittering IDM, jungle breakbeats and glitch-hop into something genuinely beautiful. Picture frantic, chopped-up drum programming colliding with Sara's gorgeous angelic vocals floating right on top. It's the kind of gloriously weird, lovingly handcrafted electronic music you feel lucky to stumble into.

Did you knowTheir 2007 debut is titled 'Prah Suomafni Ruoy' — literally 'Your Infamous Harp' spelled backwards. They also moonlight under solo aliases Kept Blue and Ceratops, so the rabbit hole goes deeper than you'd think.

Forever Transient2010

You've Come a Long Way, Baby cover Vol. 39

Fatboy Slim

Big beat / electronic dance · Brighton, England

Fatboy Slim is Norman Cook, the cheeky Brighton legend who basically invented the big-beat sound and turned the late-'90s into one giant sweaty dancefloor. He chops up funk, hip-hop, soul and acid house into gloriously chaotic, hook-stuffed bangers that feel like a party crammed into three minutes. If you want music that grins at you the whole way through, this is it.

Did you knowBefore going solo he was the bassist in indie band The Housemartins, and his iconic 'Weapon of Choice' video starring a dancing Christopher Walken almost featured Norman himself — he had to bail because his wife Zoe Ball was giving birth that weekend.

You've Come a Long Way, Baby1998
The definitive big-beat record, stacked with 'The Rockafeller Skank,' 'Praise You' and 'Right Here, Right Now' — basically his greatest hits in one shot.
Orbital 2 cover Vol. 38

Orbital

Rave-era techno / electronica · Sevenoaks, Kent, England

Orbital are brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, who came out of the M25 rave scene in 1989 and became the act that made techno work as an album, a headline set and a proper emotional experience. Their sound is big, melodic and euphoric — acid squelch, cinematic strings and breakbeats building into the goosebump moments that made their Glastonbury 1994 set a legend. Thirty-odd years on they still headline festivals in the same torch glasses.

Did you knowThe name comes from the M25, the orbital motorway that ferried ravers to illegal parties around London. Their breakthrough single 'Chime' was recorded on their dad's cassette deck — and at the 2012 Paralympics opening ceremony Stephen Hawking joined them on stage wearing their trademark torch glasses.

Orbital 21993
The Brown Album — 'Halcyon + On + On', 'Lush 3' and 'Impact' in one place; the record that proved dance music could be an album.
Brame cover Vol. 37

Ruby My Dear

Melodic breakcore / IDM / jungle · Toulouse, France

Ruby My Dear is Julien Chastagnol, a Toulouse producer who took breakcore — the fastest, most chaotic corner of electronic music — and taught it to sing. Under the frantic drum programming sit haunting piano lines, dream-like atmospheres and real instruments, so every track feels like a film noir that suddenly breaks into a sprint. If you thought this stuff was just noise, he's the one who'll change your mind.

Did you knowHis name is a Thelonious Monk ballad and his debut album title nods to Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come — a breakcore producer who thinks like a jazz musician. He's also Igorrr's regular partner in crime: the two made the album Maigre together in 2014.

Brame2018
Jazz meets hunting horn meets classical music meets full breakcore mayhem — with Igorrr on guitars and opera singer Laure Le Prunenec on vocals, it sounds like nothing else.
Porto cover Vol. 36

Worakls

Cinematic melodic house & techno · Paris, France

Worakls is the French producer (Kevin Rodrigues) who basically asked 'what if a film score and a club banger had a beautiful baby?' — and then pulled it off. He layers sweeping strings, piano and lush orchestration over hypnotic melodic techno, so it hits you in the chest and on the dancefloor at the same time. If you've ever wanted music that feels like the climax of a movie you can also dance to, this is your guy.

Did you knowHe didn't just sample orchestras — he assembled a real one. Worakls co-founded the Hungry Music label and tours as 'Worakls Orchestra,' conducting a full live ensemble at major European venues, fusing the DJ booth and the symphony hall into one show.

Blocks & Escher

Deep, cinematic drum & bass / jungle · London, England

A mysterious drum & bass duo out of London who'd rather let the music speak than chase the spotlight. Their sound sits at the moody, emotive end of D&B and jungle — deep, cinematic and built for headphones on a late-night walk.

Did you knowThey started out on legendary labels like Digital Soundboy and Renegade Hardware before launching their own imprint, Narratives Music — and Goldie himself once said of their work, simply, 'this is art.'

Dear Science cover Vol. 34

TV on the Radio

Art-rock / post-punk soul · Brooklyn, New York, USA

Brooklyn art-rockers who've been doing genuinely weird, genuinely gorgeous stuff since 2001 — layered vocal loops, fuzzed-out guitars and horns colliding with post-punk and soul in ways that shouldn't work but absolutely do. Tunde Adebimpe and Dave Sitek started it as visual artists messing around, and it grew into one of the most inventive bands of the 2000s indie boom.

Did you knowDavid Bowie loved them so much he showed up as a guest vocalist on two tracks of their 2006 album, quietly co-signing a scrappy Brooklyn band at the height of his own mystique.

Dear Science2008
Their brightest, most accessible record — hip-hop beats, big hooks and zero filler, it's the perfect front door into their sound.
Lu:k cover Vol. 33

Lu:k

Lo-fi bedroom jungle / early Estonian D&B · Estonia

Picture teenage kids in mid-'90s Estonia — a dirt-poor, brand-new republic — taping UK jungle off Finnish late-night radio because that was the only way to hear it, then rebuilding it on entry-level software, custom-made soundcards and PCs that bandmate Tõnis Valk put together himself. That's Lu:k — Virko Veskoja and friends, quietly inventing Estonian jungle and drum & bass between 1994 and 1997, before it even had a name here.

Did you knowThe name 'Lu:k' was picked to mean nothing — it happens to be Estonian for 'hatch' or 'trap door'. Their two cassette albums and one 12" vanished for decades until Tallinn label Memme Vaev pressed eight of the tracks to vinyl in 2025.

Ott

Lush psychedelic dub / psy-dub · Somerset, United Kingdom

Ott (born Ott Langrell) is the undisputed wizard of psychedelic dub, building gorgeous, bass-heavy, kaleidoscopic soundscapes that wrap around you like a warm blanket. His music is impossibly detailed and trippy without ever being cheesy — all melting echoes and organic textures. If you've ever wanted dub reggae to take you to outer space, this is your guy.

Did you knowBefore going solo he engineered and produced for Sinéad O'Connor, The Orb and Brian Eno, and he's a longtime collaborator of Shpongle's Simon Posford. His Hallucinogen 'In Dub' project basically reinvented psytrance as slow-motion dub and became a genre landmark.

Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents cover Vol. 30

Xploding Plastix

Cinematic nu-jazz / big-beat · Oslo, Norway

This Norwegian duo (Jens Petter Nilsen & Hallvard Wennersberg Hagen) makes music that sounds like the soundtrack to a 1960s spy heist filtered through a glitchy laptop. They fuse slinky upright bass and jazzy keys with chopped breakbeats — organic and electronic at once, and endlessly cool. Perfect for when you want something cinematic that still grooves hard.

Did you knowTheir tracks are studded with vintage film samples — 'Six Hours Starlight' lifts dialogue straight from Hitchcock's North by Northwest. They got a real career boost when their music started showing up everywhere in ads, TV and trailers in the early 2000s.

Cosmogramma cover Vol. 29

Flying Lotus

Psychedelic beat-music / jazz-electronic · Los Angeles, USA

Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison) is the mad genius bending hip-hop, free jazz and electronic music into swirling cosmic shapes that shouldn't work but absolutely do. His beats glitch, stutter and bloom like a living organism — somehow both head-nodding and spiritually overwhelming. Put it on and your brain genuinely rewires itself.

Did you knowHe's the grand-nephew of jazz legend Alice Coltrane and a cousin of Ravi Coltrane, so that spiritual-jazz DNA runs deep. He also founded the Brainfeeder label, produced years of Adult Swim bumpers, and secretly released rap as an alter ego named Captain Murphy.

Jaga Jazzist

Maximalist nu-jazz / post-rock · Tønsberg, Norway

Jaga Jazzist are what happens when a small army of Norwegian prodigies refuse to pick one genre and cram all of them into gorgeous, layered compositions. Big-band jazz, glitchy electronics, math-rock and post-rock swelling into intricate, goosebump-inducing builds. Brainy and euphoric at the same time — and live, an absolute force of nature.

Did you knowThe band started in 1994 when the Horntveth siblings were literal teenagers, with Lars just 14. They're so genre-resistant they openly shrug off the 'nu-jazz' tag everyone slaps on them, saying it never meant anything to them.

Ritual Union cover Vol. 27

Little Dragon

Electronic soul-pop / synth-funk · Gothenburg, Sweden

Little Dragon are the kind of band that makes you wonder why everyone isn't this effortlessly cool. Fronted by the magnetic Yukimi Nagano, they spin smoky, synth-drenched soul-pop that's equal parts dancefloor and 3am headphone trip. Once that voice floats over their woozy electronics, you're hooked for life.

Did you knowThe name came from Yukimi's studio 'fuming tantrums' that earned her the nickname 'Little Dragon.' And Damon Albarn only found them because his partner was a fan — recruiting them for Gorillaz's 'Plastic Beach' before Yukimi even knew who Gorillaz were.

Ritual Union2011
Their tightest, hookiest distillation of everything that makes them great — with a title track that'll live in your head for weeks.
Archipelago cover Vol. 26

Hidden Orchestra

Cinematic jazz-noir / electronica · Edinburgh, Scotland

Hidden Orchestra is the studio brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Joe Acheson, who records musicians one at a time and stitches them together as one imaginary ensemble. The result is lush, brooding cinematic music swirling jazz, classical, dub, drum-and-bass and film-score drama into something spine-tingling. Live, it explodes into a dual-drummer powerhouse.

Did you knowAcheson is obsessed with field recordings — his work 'Wingbeats' was built almost entirely from manipulated bird songs, and he'll happily sample a cooker timer or a creaking board if he likes the sound. The 'orchestra' is hidden because it never actually plays in the same room.

Archipelago2012
Modal jazz, Sufi rhythms, field recordings — their most celebrated album pulls from everywhere and somehow lands perfectly. Put it on and just let it take you somewhere.
Autumn Bells cover Vol. 25

Gidge

Organic ambient techno · Umeå, Sweden

Gidge is the Swedish duo of Ludvig Stolterman & Jonathan Nilsson, who met at 16 and bonded over electronic music in the far north of Sweden. Their sound is gorgeously cinematic ambient-techno — melting chopped vocal samples and neo-classical melody into slow-building, euphoric climaxes that feel like sunrise over a frozen forest. Headphone music that still moves a dancefloor.

Did you knowTrue to their Nordic roots, they've literally recorded out in the forests of Umeå, weaving in organic textures like wooden and stone percussion. The woods around their hometown aren't just an influence — they're practically a band member.

Autumn Bells2014
Their breakout debut and still their defining statement — nine tracks of immersive, emotional ambient techno critics call a modern great.
From Soul to Soul cover Vol. 24

Tok Tok Tok

Acoustic soul with jazz roots · Freiburg, Germany

Tok Tok Tok was a German duo built around the velvet-warm voice of Tokunbo Akinro and the multi-instrumental wizardry of Morten Klein (sax, guitar, drums, even mouth percussion). They strip soul, jazz and pop to the bone and rebuild it as something intimate and groove-drenched — like a late-night conversation. Across 15 years they toured from São Paulo to Tel Aviv before bowing out in 2013.

Did you knowFrontwoman Tokunbo Akinro has a German mother and Nigerian father, and grew up in Nigeria before moving to Germany at age 10 — a double-belonging that runs all through her lyrics. The band even won the German Jazz Award for the compilation gathering their early work.

Turntable Soul Music cover Vol. 23

Belleruche

Trip-hop / 'turntable soul' · London, England

Belleruche are a gloriously analog London trio who basically invented their own genre — 'turntable soul music.' Picture Kathrin deBoer's smoky, Sarah-Vaughan-ish vocals draped over Ricky Fabulous's bluesy guitar and DJ Modest's crackly, hands-on scratching. Warm and dusty like Portishead or Morcheeba, but way more playful and live-sounding. Hear one track and you'll want the whole crate.

Did you knowThe band formed by accident — Ricky and Modest were doing turntable-and-guitar sets in London bars, bumped into Kathrin at a market, and she sang over a cup of tea. Their track 'Northern Girls' later soundtracked Mercedes-Benz's 125th-anniversary UK ads.

Žofka

Electro-chanson / lounge noir · Zurich, Switzerland

Žofka are a Zurich duo who sound like a smoky Parisian cabaret got remixed in a chic chillout lounge — producer Michal Ricar layers dreamy beats, accordion and film-score atmospherics under the velvety, soul-soaked French vocals of Myriam Russo. Nostalgic and modern at once, seductive and playfully kitschy. If you love where Air, Nouvelle Vague and a vintage Gainsbourg record overlap, these two are your people.

Did you knowBefore joining Žofka in 2002, singer Myriam Russo lent her voice to none other than the Godfather of Dub, Lee 'Scratch' Perry — quite the leap from reggae-dub royalty to French-language lounge-pop.

Skalpel cover Vol. 21

Skalpel

Nu-jazz / trip-hop from vintage samples · Wrocław, Poland

Skalpel is the Wrocław duo of Marcin Cichy & Igor Pudło — two crate-digging producers who turned dusty 1960s–70s Polish jazz LPs into smoky, head-nodding hip-hop beats. Imagine a candlelit jazz club where the band got chopped up and re-spliced by a DJ: warm vinyl crackle, double bass, brushed drums. Cinematic, cool and ridiculously easy to love.

Did you knowThey were Ninja Tune's first-ever Polish signing, picked up off a self-released demo called 'Polish Jazz.' The whole sound is built from sampling Poland's own jazz golden age — essentially a love letter to their country's record collection.

Jazzamor

Bossa-nova lounge / nu-jazz · Germany

Jazzamor is a German duo (vocalist Bettina Steingass & producer Roland Grosch) serving up smooth, sun-warmed lounge music with a 1960s bossa nova and Latin-jazz soul. Bettina's airy, intimate voice floats over relaxed grooves that feel like a lazy afternoon on a café terrace. The ultimate easy-listening comfort music that never feels generic.

Did you knowIt started in 2001 as a pure studio project with no intention of playing live — but their very first concert kicked off a touring run across Europe and Asia. Over time they've leaned back toward live, classic-jazz instrumentation rather than programmed sounds.

Lusine

Emotive IDM / microhouse · Seattle, USA

Lusine is Jeff McIlwain, a producer who makes meticulously crafted electronic music that's somehow both brainy and deeply warm. He blurs techno, ambient, microhouse and electro-pop into crystalline, soulful arrangements that reward headphone listening. It's the rare 'IDM' that actually has a heartbeat — and gets stuck in your head.

Did you knowHe started out as 'L'usine' (French for 'the factory') before trimming it to Lusine, which happens to be Armenian for 'moon.' He's been a cornerstone of the influential Ghostly International label for over two decades.

Lemon Jelly

Downtempo / folktronica · London, England

A London duo (Fred Deakin + Nick Franglen) who basically bottled a feeling and called it music. Their sound is a gorgeous swirl of downtempo beats, folktronica, found sounds and hazy psychedelia — like a Sunday afternoon that refuses to end. They came up through a series of limited-run EPs in the late '90s that became cult objects before most people even knew their name.

Did you knowThey got nominated for a Mercury Prize AND a BRIT Award — a pretty wild range for a duo most people have never heard of. And every track on their final album '64–'95 sampled audio from a specific year between 1964 and 1995. That's commitment.

Sonar Kollektiv Orchester

Orchestral funk-jazz / nu-jazz big band · Berlin, Germany

Picture a 15-piece big band born out of a birthday party — that's basically what this is. Berlin's legendary Sonar Kollektiv label turned 10 in 2007 and decided the best way to celebrate was to assemble a label super-group. The result is a lush, funky orchestra blending jazz, soul and electronica in the most joyful way imaginable.

Did you knowThis wasn't some one-off vanity project — they had a proper musical director (Volker Meitz, collaborator of Jazzanova and Clara Hill), real strings, horns and vocalists. A 15-person ensemble built purely out of love for the music.

Pretty Lights

Electro hip-hop / glitchy funk & soul · Fort Collins, Colorado, USA

Derek Vincent Smith is a college dropout from Fort Collins who decided making music was way more important than a degree — and honestly, hard to argue with that call. His sound is a gorgeous collision of electro hip-hop, vintage funk and soul samples, and glitchy beats that somehow feel both nostalgic and totally futuristic.

Did you knowHe gave away ALL his music for free — just put it on the internet like 'here you go, enjoy'. And Rick Rubin once called him 'the face and voice of the new American electronic music scene.' Casual.

Austrian producer Marcus Füreder was making electro swing cool long before anyone else thought to smash vintage jazz horns into thumping electronic beats. His music sounds like a 1930s speakeasy teleported into a Berlin club night — impossibly groovy and weirdly timeless. If you've ever wondered what jazz would sound like if it was made for dancing until 3am, this is your guy.
